Why Gutters Matter for Insurance Claims
Gutters are frequently damaged alongside the roof during storms. Hail dents aluminum gutters, wind displaces or crushes sections, and falling branches can tear gutters from the fascia. When gutters are damaged, they should be included in the claim scope as a separate section of the estimate. Additionally, during any full re-roof, gutters often need to be removed and reinstalled to allow proper installation of drip edge and starter strip, and this detach-and-reset labor is a legitimate line item.
Gutters in Xactimate Estimates
Gutter line items in Xactimate are measured in linear feet and categorized by material, size, and style. Common selections include 5-inch K-style aluminum (the residential standard), 6-inch K-style, and half-round profiles. Each has a different selector code and unit price. The estimate should also include inside corners, outside corners, end caps, gutter hangers, and downspout connections as separate items where applicable.
Gutter Detach and Reset
One of the most frequently missed line items in re-roof estimates is gutter detach and reset. When a roof is torn off and replaced, the gutters must be removed to install new drip edge at the eave. After the new roof is installed, the gutters are remounted. This labor is not included in the standard roofing line items and must be added separately. Failing to include it leaves the contractor absorbing labor costs that should be covered by the claim.
Frequently asked questions
Gutters damaged by the same covered peril (wind, hail, fallen tree) that damaged the roof should be included in the claim. Gutters have separate line items in Xactimate and are measured in linear feet. Gutter damage from normal wear or clogging is not covered.
Yes. If gutters must be removed to properly install drip edge and starter strip during a re-roof, the detach and reset of gutters is a separate line item. This is commonly overlooked, leading to supplement requests.
Gutters are measured in linear feet in Xactimate. The line items specify the material (aluminum, vinyl, copper, steel) and the profile size (typically 5-inch or 6-inch K-style). Seamless and sectional gutters may have different selector codes.
